What Is a Boxing Title Belt Made Of? Every Part of a Championship Belt, From Our Sialkot Workshop

Most people only see a boxing title belt from ten rows back or on a TV screen. We see them in pieces: a sheet of brass, a strip of leather, a tray of stones waiting to be set. We’ve been making championship belts in Sialkot since 2002, and this is what actually goes into one.

Key Takeaways

  • Every belt has one center plate plus 2, 4, or 6 side plates, mounted on a leather strap.
  • Plates are brass (2mm to 4mm thick) or zinc (4mm), then etched or mold cast and plated.
  • At custom belt prices, the “gold” is plating. A real 24k gold belt under $200 doesn’t exist.
  • A custom belt takes 10 to 15 working days, and engraving is the slowest step.

What Is a Boxing Title Belt Made Of?

A boxing title belt is made of metal plates mounted on a leather strap. The plates are usually brass or zinc, shaped by etching or mold casting, then plated in a gold or silver finish. Glass stones and enamel or paint add the color and shine.

Official belts from the big sanctioning bodies follow the same basic build. The differences are the finish, the stones, and who’s allowed to hand them out. We’ll get to that further down.

The Parts of a Championship Belt, Explained

Here’s what we call each part on the workshop floor:

  • Center plate: The big plate in the middle. It carries the title, logo, or event name.
  • Side plates: Smaller plates on either side of the center. They hold flags, names, weight classes, or sponsor logos.
  • Side strap tips: The metal pieces at each end of the strap. They protect the leather edges and finish the look.
  • Leather strap: The base that everything mounts on. It wraps around the waist and carries the weight of the plates.

Plate size isn’t fixed. The artwork decides how big each plate gets. A design with a long title name needs a wider center plate than a simple logo does.

How Many Plates Does a Boxing Championship Belt Have?

Every belt we make has one center plate and 2, 4, or 6 side plates. The center plate never changes. More side plates give you more room for names, flags, and logos, and they add more weight to the strap.

Brass vs. Zinc vs. Silver Mold Casting: Which Plate Metal Is Best?

We work with three plate options. Thickness is the main choice you make with brass.

Plate metalThicknesses we useWhat we use it for
Brass2mm, 3mm, or 4mmEtched custom designs
Zinc4mmEtched custom designs
Silver mold castingSet by the moldPredesigned plates you personalize

Thicker plates feel more solid in the hand. Brass is a denser metal than zinc, so a brass plate weighs more than a zinc plate of the same size and thickness.

Etching vs. Mold Casting: How the Design Gets Onto the Plate

We use two methods to put a design on metal. Which one we pick depends on whether you’re starting from scratch or from one of our existing designs.

Etching, for Fully Custom Designs

Etching works your artwork into a flat brass or zinc plate, and then we engrave the fine detail by hand. We use etching for most custom belts because it starts from any design you send. It doesn’t need a mold.

Mold Casting, for Predesigned Plates You Personalize

Mold casting means pouring melted metal into a ready made mold. We use it when you choose one of our predesigned plates and add your own names or text. Our silver mold casting belts are made this way.

Are Boxing Title Belts Real Gold?

Not at custom belt prices. Our belts use artificial gold plating over brass or zinc. Real gold plating is available from $130 through a third party plater, but we can’t guarantee that outside work.

What “Gold Plated” Actually Means on a Championship Belt

Plating is a thin metal coating bonded to the surface of the plate. The plate underneath is still brass or zinc. That’s how a belt gets the gold look without the cost of solid gold.

We don’t make solid gold or solid silver plates, and we don’t set real diamonds. They’re too expensive to make and too costly to ship safely.

Why a 24k Gold Belt for $150 Doesn’t Exist

This is the mistake we hear most. A buyer pays around $150 and expects 24 karat gold. Gold plating alone costs more than that, so a “24k gold” belt under $200 is either fake or not 24k.

If a seller promises real 24k gold at that price, ask them to put it in writing. Then ask who does their plating.

How Long Does Belt Plating Last?

With normal display and handling, our plating stays smooth for months and often for years. Humidity wears plating down fastest. A belt left out in damp, open air dulls sooner than one kept in a dry room.

Stones and Color: Glass Stones, Enamel, and Paint

The sparkle on our belts comes from good quality glass stones, not cubic zirconia.

Color goes on as baked enamel or paint, depending on the design. Enamel is a colored coating baked onto the metal so it sets hard.

The Strap: Synthetic Leather vs. Genuine Cowhide

Our standard strap is synthetic leather. Genuine cowhide is available for an extra charge. Choose cowhide if you want the feel and smell of real leather.

Standard 48 Inch Length and Custom Sizing

Our standard belt is 48 inches long. We can make it shorter or longer to fit your champion or your display. Just give us the size when you order.

Where Cheap Championship Belts Cut Corners

Cheap belts save money in places a product photo won’t show you. Check these before you buy:

  • Poor fake leather. It cracks, peels, and loses its shape after a few months.
  • Low grade metal that rusts. Rust spots work through the plating over time.
  • “24k gold” claims under $200. At that price, it isn’t real 24k gold.
  • No proof before payment. Ask for real photos and video of your actual belt before you pay anything.

Official Title Belts vs. Replicas vs. Custom Belts: What’s Actually Different

In boxing, the WBC, WBA, IBF, and WBO each award their own distinct championship belt to the champion of every weight class. Those official belts aren’t sold to the public. They’re awarded at title fights, which is why promoters, gyms, and fans come to makers like us. Wikipedia

How We Make a Boxing Championship Belt, Step by Step

A custom belt takes 10 to 15 working days from start to finish. Several craftsmen work on each belt, and each one handles a different stage.

  1. Finalize the artwork. We size each plate to your design and send you a mockup on WhatsApp before you pay anything.
  2. Cut the metal. Brass or zinc sheet is cut into the center plate and side plates.
  3. Etch or cast the design. We etch custom artwork and mold cast predesigned plates.
  4. Engrave the detail. This is the slowest step in the whole build.
  5. Plate the metal. The gold or silver finish goes on.
  6. Add color and stones. Enamel or paint goes on first, then the glass stones.
  7. Cut and color the leather. The strap is cut to length and painted.
  8. Assemble the belt. The plates and side strap tips mount onto the strap.

Boxing Title Belt FAQs

Do boxers keep their belts after losing?

Yes. Champions keep their belts even after they lose the title, and a new belt is made whenever a new champion is crowned. Wikipedia

How much does a boxing title belt weigh?

It depends on the plate metal, the plate thickness, and the number of side plates. A full size belt from our workshop is 48 inches long and weighs 1.5kg or more. For more detail, see what a full size replica boxing belt should weigh.

How much does a custom boxing championship belt cost?

Our full size custom belts start at $125.51. Upgrades like real gold plating and genuine cowhide cost extra.

How long does it take to make a championship belt?

It takes 10 to 15 working days. Engraving the metal takes the longest, and shipping time comes on top of that.
